supervision

what is clinical supervision?

Clinical supervision is a formal process of professional support and learning that enables individual clinicians to develop knowledge and competence, assume responsibility for their own practice, and enhance consumer protection and safety of care in complex clinical situations. It involves a more experienced professional, known as a supervisor, guiding another professional or group in their professional development and practice. This process is essential for ensuring the quality of care and therapeutic integrity within the counseling profession.

Who needs clinical supervision?

SC State’s professional counselor associate requirements

Clinical supervision is specifically designed for Licensed Professional Counselor Associates (LPC-As). These are professionals who have completed their educational requirements in counseling or a closely related field and are in the process of gaining the required clinical experience for full licensure. Supervision provides LPC-As with the guidance, feedback, and support necessary to grow into competent, ethical, and independent counseling professionals.

In South Carolina, Professional Counselor Associate applicants must meet specific education and examination requirements and can only practice under an approved clinical supervision plan. This regulatory framework ensures that all counseling services provided by LPC-As meet the highest standards of professional practice.

To obtain the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) license, applicants must document completion of a minimum of 1,500 hours of post-master’s clinical experience and post-master’s clinical supervision in the practice of professional counseling over a period of not less than two years. Of these 1,500 hours, at least 1,380 hours must be of documented direct client contact, with a minimum of 120 hours of documented supervision. A minimum of 60 hours of the supervision hours must be individual or triadic, while the remaining 60 hours can be either individual/triadic or group supervision.
