Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Narrative Therapy?

Narrative therapy is a counseling approach in which clients learn to separate themselves from their problems. Developed in the 1980s by David Epston and Michael White, narrative therapy teaches that our lives are composed of multiple stories.

In narrative therapy, each person is the narrator of their own life stories. What’s more, their attitude of narration and perspective on the events in their lives has influence on their present and future actions.

Is Narrative Therapy Effective?

Narrative therapy is a beautiful approach to healing the hurts that stem from wounded relationships. Whether those relationships are parental, marital, or anything in between, Narrative therapy can help you begin to uncover the version of you that you WANT to be in your relationships.

It empowers clients to feel more autonomous. As such, their optimism can grow as they reevaluate negative events from an objective stance. They may also re-author unfavorable or troublesome life stories during therapy to produce a healthier outlook.

Is Narrative A Good Fit For Me?

A resounding, YES! Characterized by themes of agency and empowerment, narrative therapy is well-suited for treating depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and anger.

Narrative therapy is an advantageous tool for addressing trauma, and significantly while the clients are still children or adolescents. Storytelling is a natural inclination that most of us have, and generally develops during childhood, making it an easier approach for young clients as well.

Do I Need Counseling or Coaching?

Counseling is typically geared towards healing and dealing with emotional distress, mental health issues, or past traumas. It’s often the path to take if you’re looking to understand and resolve deeper psychological issues, with many policies covering it under health insurance.

Coaching focuses on achieving specific goals and maximizing your potential, whether in your career, relationships, or personal life. It’s ideal for those who are already functioning well but aspire to elevate their current situation without any underlying mental health concerns. It’s typically not covered by health insurance since it’s considered a service for personal development, not healthcare.

What Is A Messaging Session?

This innovative approach combines the convenience of digital communication with the real-time interaction of traditional therapy. During these sessions, you will communicate with your therapist through text messages in a live, appointed time slot, within the appointment room, ensuring an immediate, focused exchange.

It’s particularly advantageous for those who find written expression easier or more reflective than spoken conversations. Our synchronous messaging sessions are secure, confidential, and designed to provide you with the same level of professional support as traditional face-to-face therapy.

FMLA & Disability Documents

Prospective clients that are seeking FMLA services please be advised that FMLA paperwork is not completed for any clients within the first 4 sessions. Client diagnosis, necessity, and engagement in treatment must be met prior to issuance of any documentation.
